Watching a Room Find Its Voice is the Best Part of the Job

Watching a room full of professionals transform their presence in a single session is why I love facilitating “Presentation Skills” sessions.

Every batch comes in with their own set of “speed bumps” – usually some version of these three:

1. Feeling like they need to be a “walking encyclopedia” of data.

2. Struggling to find a natural “stage presence” that doesn’t feel like an act.

3. The nerves that come with stepping out from behind the slides.

And at the of the session, they shifted to:

1. The Strategic Storyteller: Learning to curate information, focusing on the “So What?” that drives decision-making.

2. Commanding Presence: Using purposeful movement and open gestures to project authentic authority and warmth.

3. Audience-Centric Connection: Shifting the focus from their performance to the audience’s experience through eye contact and engagement.

The shift is what makes it worth it. It’s that moment when a “data dump” becomes a compelling story. It’s when a stiff stance melts into genuine, confident body language. Most importantly, it’s seeing the relief when they realize they don’t have to be perfect- they just have to be impactful.

To this latest batch: Thank you for leaning into the discomfort. Seeing you own your voices and connect so authentically was the highlight of my day.

Keep speaking up. Your ideas deserve to be heard clearly.
